Best Time to Visit Ajanta and Ellora Caves (with a 2-Day Plan)
The Ajanta and Ellora caves near Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and one of the best heritage trips in Maharashtra. Choosing the right season makes a big difference.
Best months to visit
October to March is generally the most comfortable time: the weather is cooler and the countryside is green after the monsoon. July to September is scenic and green, but rain can make walking around the caves slippery. April to June is very hot, so start early in the morning if you must travel then.
Closing days โ check before you go
Ajanta is normally closed on Mondays and Ellora on Tuesdays. Timings and rules can change, so confirm on the official Archaeological Survey of India listing before finalising your dates.
How many days do you need?
Most travellers prefer two days: one day for Ajanta (it is a long drive from the city and needs 3โ4 hours at the caves) and one day for Ellora with Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga and Daulatabad Fort or Bibi Ka Maqbara nearby. Doing both in one day is possible but tiring.
